Preaching the Gospel since 1947 in the Lakeport community!

Written by Pansy Reed Click – published February 7, 1947

Sunday, February 9, will be a red letter day for the little community of Lakeport, for on that day, services will be held for the purpose of organizing a church to be known as the “Church of Christ,” the first one to be established in Glades County.

For many years now, a group of faithful Christians has been banding together and has been conducting a Bible School at Lakeport each Lord’s day. The Bible School was organized by the late W.S. Click in 1928, assisted by his brothers John and Herbert. With the exception of brief intervals, the Bible School met in the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Click from the time it was organized, until their home burned in 1942, after which time, the meeting place was transferred to the community school house, where the group is holding it’s sessions at the present time. The average attendance is between forty and fifty, with a maximum attendance on special occasions running as high as sixty and seventy-five.

A letter (click here to see original) sent out this week to friends and prospects states:

Realizing the limitations of a Bible School, and realizing the ever-growing need of a church in this community organized according to the New Testament pattern, free of man-made creeds and taking the New Testament, and the New Testament alone, as the rule of faith and order, this group is inviting all those who are interested in organizing a Church of Christ to be present at an organizational meeting to be held Sunday, February 9, at 11:00 o’clock at the Lakeport school house.

Those who have met, or desire to meet, the scriptural requirements of salvation, which are faith, repentance, confession, and baptism by immersion, and are present at this meeting may have the privilege of becoming charter members of this newly organized church.

Raymond H. Peters from Cambridge, Ohio, will conduct the morning worship service; at the close of which a business meeting will be held for the purpose of organizing and making plans to apply for the Letters Patent, Incorporating the Church of Christ of Lakeport as a non-profit organization, the object of which shall be to maintain an organization for the practice and enjoyment of religious services and duties, and for the conversion of the world to the Christian religion.

It is planned to have the part-time services of a minister for the present, and to start a building fund immediately for the erection of a chapel just as soon as labor and materials are available.
